I’m new to time-of-use plans. How do they work?

On a time-of-use plan, the rate you pay is based on the time of day and day of the week you use energy. The two most popular time-of-use plans are:

  • Time-of-Use 4pm-7pm Weekdays
  • Time-of-Use 4pm-7pm Weekdays with Demand Charge.

On-peak hours: 4pm–7pm weekdays
On these plans, rates are higher during “on-peak” hours, 4pm-7pm weekdays (excluding off-peak holidays), but lower during all other times or “off-peak” hours. The Time-of-Use 4pm-7pm Weekdays with Demand Charge plan also includes a monthly demand charge for the highest hour of usage during on-peak hours.

Winter super off-peak hours: 10am-3pm weekdays
In the winter months (November through April bills), you’ll save with “super off-peak" hours. Rates are even lower during these hours, 10am-3pm weekdays (excluding off-peak holidays).

Off-peak holidays
On these plans, you’ll also save with lower-cost off-peak rates all day on 10-12 holidays a year.

Do I need to do anything differently to save on a time-of-use plan?

Based on your past energy use, you would have saved money on one of our time-of-use plans. You wouldn’t have had to do anything differently to save; simply being on a different plan would have lowered your costs. If you continue to use energy in the same way, it’s likely that switching to the Time-of-Use 4pm-7pm Weekdays or Time-of-Use 4pm-7pm Weekdays with Demand Charge plan could help you save on future bills.

That said, there are things you can do to make the most of a time-of-use plan, and possibly save more. Watch as Brian, an APS customer, explains:

Switching plans is easy, and it could help you save.

As an APS customer, you can switch rate plans as often as each billing period, if you like. That means you can try a time-of-use plan – and if you decide you want to switch back later, you can. (Keep in mind, the change will take effect with your next billing period.)

Just sign in, look for the Monthly Plan Comparison section, and click Compare and Change Plans.
