In 2017, the Arizona Corporation Commission changed how customers are credited for excess energy sent to the grid from rooftop solar systems. Solar energy credits are transitioning from the Legacy EPR-6 (net metering) to the Resource Comparison Proxy (RCP). This change helps balance energy costs for all customers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my compensation for solar energy changing?
Your current solar buyback rate lasts 20 years from the date your system was connected to the APS grid. Since that time is ending, your account is transitioning to the current buyback rate called the Resource Comparison Proxy (RCP).

What does this change mean for me?
You’ll still receive bill credits for the excess solar energy your system sends to the APS grid. The main difference is that you will now receive a dollar credit for the solar energy you provide, and you’ll select a new rate plan.

Will I still receive bill credits for the excess solar energy my system produces?
Yes. Under the RCP buyback rate, you’ll continue to receive bill credits for the excess energy your system sends to the APS grid each month.

What happens to unused bill credits?
Unused bill credits will automatically roll over to the next month.

At the end of the year:

  • If your balance is $25 or more, we’ll mail you a check.
  • If your balance is less than $25, the remaining credit stays on your account and rolls over into the next year.

Where can I find the export rate for excess solar energy sent to the grid?
Visit aps.com/renewableriders to see the current rate. The rate is reviewed each year and approved by the Arizona Corporation Commission.

How will I know I need to transition?
You will receive a notice about 60 days before you need to transition to the Resource Comparison Proxy (RCP). At that time, you will also need to select a new rate plan.

What are my rate plan options?
As a solar customer, you can choose one of these:

What happens if I don’t choose a rate plan?
If no selection is made by the deadline listed in your notice, you’ll automatically transition to the Time-of-Use 4pm-7pm Weekdays plan.

How do I choose my new rate plan?
You can contact our Customer Care team during business hours to select your preferred plan.
