Right sizing your home charging
Looking to charge your new EV at home? Find the charger that best meets your needs! Most electric vehicles come with both a Level 1 and a Level 2 charger. Level 1 chargers do not require upgrades and can plug directly into your home outlets.
The Level 2 charger provided with most vehicles can charge up to 3 kW. Use the chart to help determine which kW charger will work best for you.
Find out which charging level meets your needs in a few easy steps:
- Calculate your average daily mileage.
- Use the chart below to compare your average daily mileage with the charger that best fits your needs.
- Don’t forget about demand rates. Higher kW chargers will increase demand. Learn more about demand rates.

This chart assumes 8 hours of overnight charging and a vehicle efficiency between 2.5 - 5 miles/kWh.
Not all EV drivers will charge their vehicle every day. For example, EnergySage recommends keeping the battery between 20-80% for optimal lifetime and performance.
Chargers are available in hardwired or plug-in options. Plugs for chargers range from a standard 3-prong outlet (Level 1) to a NEMA 14-50 plug or NEMA 6-20 outlet. For additional guidance, ask your installer which option is best for you.
