Outage Tips, Tricks & Best Practices
From weather conditions to equipment failure, every power outage is different — and the time it takes to restore your power can vary greatly, too. Once you report an outage, we will give you our best estimate for when your power will turn back on.
Here are some ways you can stay safe during an outage:
- Customers with an active mobile number or email are automatically enrolled to receive outage alerts via text or email. Sign in to manage your outage alert preferences, update your contact information or make sure your enrollment is active. If you don’t have an online account, view our alerts page.
- Have your APS My Account number readily available.
- Keep flashlights and extra batteries handy.
- Store important phone numbers for medical providers, family, friends and APS in your cell phone or near your home phone.
- Keep several gallons of water and non-perishable food available for each person in your home.
- If you have an automatic garage door, learn how to open the door manually if you lose power and need to leave your home.
- Make sure your phone is fully charged and, if possible, buy portable chargers.
- Apply for our Medical Care program to receive advance notice of planned outages if you or someone in your household uses life-support equipment. Learn more

- Follow our Safety Tips, especially during an outage or storm.
- Remember that food will stay cold in the refrigerator for up to four hours and longer in the freezer if the doors are kept closed. Visit Foodsafety.gov for more information.
- Unplug all unnecessary equipment and appliances to prevent electrical spikes.
- Wait at least five minutes after the power returns to turn on major appliances and equipment.
- If your home is the only one without power in your neighborhood, the outage could be caused by your home’s circuit breaker. Watch our video at the bottom of this page for tips on how to safely reset it.
- Do not try to repair electrical problems on your own. Please call us or a certified electrician to fix the issue.
If you bought ice during an outage that was 10 hours or longer, complete this form and we will refund you for up to 20 pounds of dry ice or 40 pounds of regular ice.
