Powering Central Phoenix: Transmission Line Upgrade Boosts Reliability
In the heart of central Phoenix, schools, hospitals, homes and businesses count on reliable energy 24/7, especially during intense summer heat. As more people live, work and innovate in downtown Phoenix, a robust and reliable power supply becomes even more essential.
APS regularly monitors and evaluates infrastructure to plan for the future. In 2024, we completed phase one of a major upgrade to a 230 kilovolt (kV) underground transmission line, known as the “backbone” of the metro Phoenix 230kV system, strengthening reliability for customers to support today’s high energy demands and future growth.
The project, which replaces a line installed approximately 50 years ago, prioritizes a steady and secure power supply, minimizing the risk of outages and disruptions in customers’ daily lives. The replacement of a transmission line is thoughtfully planned for years before construction can begin. APS Engineer Steven Goss explained the extensive teamwork needed to replace a line that weighs 30,000 to 70,000 pounds per cable reel.
“We have our Underground Engineering design team who works closely with our Substation and Operational Support Engineering teams to ensure the project meets customers’ long-term needs. Our internal craft electricians also support from initial design to construction, and we work with external experts who specialize in cable and underground pipe work.”
We continue to work on upgrading additional segments of the line, as well as nearby substations, which will be completed by 2028.
