Sonoran Gateway Transmission Project
aps
Voltage: 500kV and 230kV
Estimated Completion Date: 2030
Location: Pinal County and Maricopa County
Why this project is needed:
To meet the expanding energy needs of more people and businesses throughout Pinal and Maricopa counties, we are looking to upgrade our system. The proposal for the Sonoran Gateway Transmission Project includes building new power lines that will improve energy reliability in your area. Sonoran Gateway will connect an existing substation in Red Rock (in Pinal County) to a planned substation in Buckeye (in Maricopa County). The power lines will be approximately 100 miles long.
Open Houses
Public information open house meetings:
We understand community members may have questions about the proposed project and how it could affect the area. As part of the review process, APS is seeking public input and encourages community members to participate in the upcoming public open houses.

Virtual Open Houses:
You can also participate in the virtual open house to learn more about the project and share feedback. You can find a link to the virtual open house here, starting Nov. 16. If you are unable to access the virtual open house, printed materials are available upon request. Feedback is welcome throughout the project. To ensure your input is considered during route development, please submit it by Dec. 18, 2026.
What's next?
Following the open house events in November 2026, preliminary routes will be identified for the project. Opportunities for public comment on the preliminary routes will be available once the routes are identified. To move forward with the project, a NEPA review will be required for any portion of a route crossing land owned or managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Finally, APS must obtain a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility through Arizona's siting process. The project will be reviewed by the Arizona Power Plant and Transmission Line Siting Committee before being considered by the Arizona Corporation Commission.
Project features:
The Conceptual Connections map, below, shows the project’s siting area and potential substation connections. The siting area represents the region APS is evaluating for transmission line routes, while the arrows broadly depict the project’s endpoints (the arrows do not represent specific routes for the project). The proposed project would include steel monopole structures and open-frame steel lattice structures, commonly used for new 500 kV and 230 kV power lines. The heights for high-voltage power lines typically range from 130 to 200 feet, depending on routing, terrain, and the need to cross existing features like other power lines or elevated roads.
APS is currently evaluating route options for the Sonoran Gateway Transmission project. The broad arrows shown on the map depict the general direction the project will follow. Some intermediate substations that are located along the path of the project are also depicted as potential points of connection. All routing options are still being reviewed, and no decision has been made on a final route. APS is continuing to review input from agencies, stakeholders and the public to determine preferred route options.
