Standard Meters
An Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meter works with your APS account to provide detailed information about your energy use. This can help you make informed decisions and better manage your energy costs.
AMI meters also support APS energy-saving programs and future technologies and services.
Meter readings are collected remotely and securely, so there’s no need for a meter reader to visit your property each month. If you currently have a non-standard meter, you can replace it with a standard meter at no cost.
Non-standard meters
Non-standard meters require a utility worker to visit your property each month to read the meter. To ensure accurate meter readings and billing, the meter must be safely accessible. Please:
- Unlock gates and the breaker panel
- Keep dogs and other pets away from the meter
- Keep the area around the meter clear
Requesting a non-standard meter
Most customers use a standard AMI meter. If you choose a non-standard meter, you won’t have access to detailed energy-use information and may not be eligible for certain rate plans and programs.
Non-standard meters are not available for business customers or residential customers with solar systems.
A $50 fee applies for each meter exchange, plus a $5 monthly fee. The monthly fee is waived for customers in locations where wireless technology or automated equipment cannot be used.
To request a non-standard meter, call 602-371-7171 (metro Phoenix) or 800-253-9405 (other areas).
Meter Replacement Project
APS is partnering with Contract Callers Inc. (CCI) to replace obsolete meters throughout our service territory. This is part of an ongoing effort to maintain our electric grid and provide reliable service. The meters being replaced are working properly. We’re replacing aging meters proactively, and the exchanges should not affect your billing.

How to identify our technicians
- Wearing a bright orange or yellow shirt with CCI logo
- Wearing an APS contractor badge on their arm
- Vehicle has APS and CCI logo, not a standard APS truck

What to expect
When CCI technicians arrive, they will knock on your door and try to speak with you before beginning work. Our technicians may ask you to:
Unlock gates and provide access to the breaker panel
Keep pets inside
Clear the area around the meter
Unplug sensitive electronics
The meter exchange will only be completed when a technician can safely access the meter and breaker panel.
If the breaker box is locked
From time to time, we may need to access the meter on your property to inspect, read or maintain it. If we need to remove a lock from your breaker box, we’ll leave a new lock and keys for you. Please see our Terms and Conditions for more information.
Your power will be out briefly
Expect a brief power outage while your meter is being replaced. Most exchanges take just a few minutes. For safety, the technician will turn off the breakers during the exchange.
After the outage, you may need to reset clocks and other electronics. If you’re a solar customer, please check that your solar equipment is working properly. You can contact your solar provider for support, if needed.
You'll be notified in advance
CCI will send a postcard 15-30 days before meter replacement work is expected to begin in your neighborhood. You'll also receive a phone call reminder the week the work is scheduled.
Where we’re working

You don't need to be home
If no one answers the door, the technician may still complete the meter exchange if they can access the meter and the electrical panel safely.
If they can't safely access the equipment, they'll leave a door hanger with instructions for scheduling a return visit.
