aps, valley businesses come together to support military employees

ESGR training highlights veterans and companies that employ them

PHOENIX – With more than 600,000 veterans living in Arizona, supporting veteran, Guard and Reserve personnel is important to Arizona companies like APS, where veterans account for 20 percent of the workforce. Yesterday, APS hosted an Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) training, which was attended by more than two dozen managers from Valley businesses. The training is meant to help managers understand the employment laws associated with returning service members.

“As a company, the hiring of veterans is more than just a box to be checked on an employment form. It is a statement of support for the men and women of our nation’s armed forces, and quite simply, it’s just good business,” stated APS Chairman, President and CEO Don Brandt. “Veterans bring a superb and diverse skill set to companies and naturally tend to be leaders within an organization. I’m proud that APS was able to host today’s training, which will make a difference for veterans and the companies that employ them.”

ESGR works to promote cooperation and understanding between Reserve Service members and their civilian employers. The training provided exposure to ESGR’s role and the employment laws that protect employees who are mobilized to support worldwide active duty missions.

As a company, APS works to foster an inclusive environment for veterans, including the creation of a veterans’ employee networking group focusing on volunteerism, retention and the transition from active duty to civilian life. Currently, APS proudly employs 1,200 veterans. At today’s training, Mr. Brandt re-signed a Statement of Support to ESGR reaffirming APS’s commitment to its veteran employees.

APS hopes to build community support for veterans in the workplace by promoting the success of its own veteran support processes and through partnerships with organizations like ESGR.

APS is the Southwest’s leading producer of clean, safe and reliable electricity. The company also is a proven leader in introducing next generation tools, products and services that offer customers personalized management of their energy consumption. As one of Arizona’s leading corporate citizens, APS is a positive contributor in the communities it serves, including philanthropy, volunteerism, economic development, and as a top military employer.
