Residential limited- and moderate-income customers could save $360 a year on their electric bill with the APS Solar Communities program.

​​​The APS Solar Communities program for residential customers is a unique opportunity for limited- and moderate-income customers, who may not have considered rooftop solar an option, the ability to help advance solar in Arizona. Participation in the program is FREE and qualified participants will receive $360 a year off their energy bill for the next 20 years for participating in the program. The program:​​ 
  • provides annual savings of $360 ($30 a month) off your APS electric bill
  • is a FREE program with no cost to you
  • does not require credit checks or lease payments
  • is open to customers who meet the income eligibility requirement
  • is for qualified single-family homes with a roof t​hat:

      • has a west- or south-facing side that is not shaded
      • is in good condition
      • has enough space to accommodate a minimum of 8 solar panels, a minimum of 200 square feet, plus additional clearance space for fire code requirements
      • manufactured homes need to meet "single-family" requirements and pass a review. Mobile homes do not qualify.
how it works
​The APS Solar Communities program is offered to qualified residential customers that meet the eligibility requirements.    
     
  1. To apply, simply answer a few pre-qualification questions    
  2. If you meet the basic eligibility requirements, you will be prompted to complete an application and will need to sign an agreement    
  3. Once your information has been verified, you'll be contacted to:     
      • submit your income information to verify your income eligibility (customers currently enrolled in our Energy Support program will not need to re-verify their income)    
      • schedule an appointment to have an installer come to your home to conduct a site survey and roof inspection   
  4. If your home passes the on-site inspection and your income eligibility is verified, you'll be contacted to schedule the installation of the solar on your roof    
  5. Once the system is installed, it will be inspected by your local municipality    
  6. We'll then do our own inspection to make sure the system is correctly connected to our grid, install a production meter to make sure the system is producing as it should, and turn it on    
  7. You will then begin seeing a $30 credit on your monthly bill

is your single-family home ready for rooftop solar?
​There are many conditions that make a home the perfect candidate for the APS Solar Communities program. The following qualifiers will help you determine if your home qualifies.

  • the pitch of the roof is angled toward the west or south, capturing direct afternoon sunlight
  • the west or south side of the roof is free from shade
  • the roof of your home must be in good condition and be able to accommodate a minimum of 8 solar panels, a minimum of 200 square feet, plus additional clearance space for fire code requirements
  • roof types that are ideal for rooftop solar panels are:
      • shingle
      • flat concrete tile
      • metal-architectural standing seam
  • home selection based on location suitability
income verification process
If you are not currently enrolled in our Energy Support program, you will need to verify your income.​

If you receive public assistance, you can include an award letter from one of the following accepted public assistance agencies:

  • Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP)
  • Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
  • Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
    Otherwise, provide relevant documents from the accepted income documents list below, showing at least one recent month’s income for all adult members of your household (copies must be submitted for all adults living in the home):

    • One month’s worth of recent pay stubs
    • W-2’s for the past year
    • Most recent year’s Federal Tax Form 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ
    • Most recent year’s Federal and State income tax returns if self-employed
    • Supplemental security income (SSI)
    • Social security disability income
    • Veterans benefits
    • Annuities
    • Unemployment benefits
    • Arizona Health Care Cost Containment Systems (AHCCCS)

    Important: Your income documents will not be returned. Do not send original documents. All documents will be handled in a secure and confidential manner and will be destroyed after processing is complete.

    ​​​Use the income eligibility guidelines below to see if you meet the income eligibility requirement for the APS Solar Communities program.

    Customers will need to complete a program application prior to submitting income documentation. Customers that are not currently enrolled in our Energy Support Program program will receive a communication with instructions on when and how to submit income documentation.

    The APS Solar Communities program is open to non-residential customers that serve the limited income population, including Title I schools, nonprofits, rural governments and municipalities. Participation in the program is FREE and qualified non-residential customers will receive a solar-covered parking structure and a monthly bill credit on their energy bill. The program:

    • Provides a free solar-covered parking structure on the non-residential property to be owned and maintained by APS for 20 years

    • Provides annual savings off your APS electric bill for 20 years*

      *bill credit will be valued based on the size of your parking structure solar system ($2.5/kW)

    • Is a FREE program with no cost to you

    • Is open to non-residential customers who meet the following eligibility requirements:

      • Have enough outdoor space to accommodate a minimum 50kW size system (about 20 parking spots)

      • Does not have existing covered parking on-site

      • Serve APS limited-income customers

    how it works
    The APS Solar Communities program is offered to qualified non-residential customers that meet the eligibility requirements.
    1. To apply, have an authorized representative complete an application
    2. Once your information has been verified, and you meet the requirements, you’ll be contacted to schedule appointments for an on-site walk through and an inspection of your property (different days)
    3. If your site passes the on-site walk through and inspection, you will need to sign an agreement
    4. Prior to design work of your project, we will need the owner of the land and/or the property to sign an easement for access of the solar installation
    5. We will work with an Arizona-based solar installer to review the project site plan
    6. The permitting/construction phase will begin
    7. When construction is complete, we’ll then do our own inspection to verify the system is correctly connected to our grid, install a production meter, and turn it on
    8. You will begin seeing the bill credit on your monthly bill

    aps solar communities program multifamily

    The APS Solar Communities program is open to multifamily housing complexes that serve the limited-income population. Examples of housing complexes that meet the income requirements for this program include government assisted housing, public housing, and privately-owned complexes that serve the limited-income population. Participation in the program is FREE and qualified multifamily housing complexes will receive a solar-covered parking structure plus a $1,000 annual bill credit and the tenants will receive a $15 monthly bill credit on their energy bill. The program: 

     

    • Provides a free solar-covered parking structure in the housing complex and will be owned and maintained by APS for 20 years 

    • Provides annual savings for 20 years of $1,000 off the complex’s APS electric bill as long as the parking structure is on the premises and $15 off the monthly electric bill of the tenants as long as the tenant lives in the complex. ​

    • Is a FREE program with no cost to you or the tenants 

    • Is open to multifamily housing complex owners who meet the following eligibility requirements: 

      • Have enough outdoor space to accommodate a minimum 50kW size system (about 20 parking spots) 

      • Do not have existing covered parking on-site 

      • At least 50% of tenants must meet the income requirements for this program 

      • ​All units must be individually metered 

      • Other restrictions may apply​

    how it works

    The APS Solar Communities program is offered to qualified multifamily housing complexes that meet the eligibility requirements. 

    1. To apply, have an authorized representative/owner of the multifamily complex complete an application (tenants should not complete an application) 

    2. Once your information has been verified, and you meet the requirements, you’ll be contacted to schedule appointments for an on-site walk through and an inspection of your property (different days)

    3. If your site passes the on-site walk through and inspection, you will need to sign an agreement 

    4. Prior to design work of your project, we will need the owner of the land and/or the property to sign an easement for access of the solar installation 

    5. We will work with an Arizona-based solar installer to review the project site plan 

    6. The permitting/construction phase will begin

    7. When construction is com plete, we’ll then do our own inspection to verify the system is correctly connected to our grid, install a production meter, and turn it on 

    8. The multifamily housing complex will receive the annual $1,000 bill credit and tenants will start receiving the $15 monthly bill credit as long as they live in the complex.
