preventing outages
In 2015 we invested $1 billion in Arizona's power grid to better serve our customers and enhance our ability to provide safe and reliable power.

We have 400 first responders available for maintenance and repairs.

Because of these and other efforts, one or less outages are experienced by our customers per year on average.
why outages occur
Sometimes outages do occur and some of the common causes are storms, wildfires, equipment failure and foreign interference such as cars hitting poles or mylar balloons contacting power lines

  1. Keep your distance. Stay at least 100 feet away. The ground may be electrified and cause a shock
  2. If the line is touching your car, stay in your car. The tires are good insulators and will protect you
  3. If you must leave your car, be sure you don't touch the ground and the car at the same time. Keep your feet together so they both touch the ground at the same time
  4. If you see someone trapped by a power line, do not try to remove them. Call 911. Then call APS at 855-688-2437
preparing for an outage
​Being prepared can help keep you safe during an outage

  • Place flashlights and extra batteries in handy locations
  • Have your APS account number readily available in case of an outage.
  • Keep important phone numbers (i.e. medical, APS, family and friends) by the phone or stored in your cell phone.
  • Install surge protectors to protect sensitive electrical items like computers.
  • If you use medical equipment that requires electricity, call to register for the APS Medical Preparedness Program at 602-371-7171 (outside metro Phoenix, call 800-253-9405). This alerts APS to your needs in the event of an outage.
  • Have a gallon of clean water available for each person and non-perishable foods.
  • If you have an automatic garage door, be sure to know how to open the door manually in case you are without power.

what to do during an outage
Follow these tips to stay safe and informed during an outage while we work to quickly restore your power

  • Visit or download our app to report an outage and view our online outage map
  • Call APS at 855-688-2437 (Residential) or 602-371-6767 (Business). Reporting an outage helps us to locate and fix the problem faster
  • Don’t try to repair electrical problems on your own. Electricity can be deadly
  • Use flashlights. If a flashlight isn't available and you must use candles, keep them away from curtains and other flammable materials. Never leave candles unattended
  • Don't open refrigerators or freezers more than necessary. Food can be preserved for long periods without electricity if the doors are kept closed
  • Turn off and unplug all unnecessary electrical equipment and appliances. This will protect your valuables from electrical spikes and keep the electrical system from overloading when power returns. Wait 5-10 minutes after power comes on to plug in and turn on major appliances and electrical equipment
If your home is the only one without power in your neighborhood, the outages could be because of your home's circuit breaker
  • If you have a need for electrically operated medical equipment, make arrangements for a place to stay with electricity in the event of an extended outage. In an emergency, call 911.
  • Don't cook indoors with devices designed for outdoor use, such as charcoal grills and camp stoves. Carbon monoxide from these devices can make you ill and can even be fatal.
  • In hot weather, drink plenty of fluids to prevent heat-related illness.
  • In cold weather, wear layers of clothes and move around to keep warm. ​

resetting your circuit breaker
If your home is the only one with no power, it may be your circuit breaker box.
  • First, turn off all major appliances and most lights. Leave one light on so you can see when power is restored.
  • Make sure your hands are dry and you are standing on a dry surface. Identify the breaker switch that is in (or toward) the "off" position. Turn it all the way to "off" and then to the "on" position.
  • If all the power is off, the main breaker may need to be reset.
  • If the breaker tripped because there is something wrong with an appliance, be sure to have the necessary repairs made before using the appliance again.
Older homes may have fuses instead of circuit breakers. Some fuses have exposed terminals that can deliver a shock when touched. If you are not comfortable changing fuses, call an electrician for assistance.
APS owns, and is responsible for electrical wiring up to and including your meter. You are responsible for the wiring beginning with your circuit breaker panel and continuing throughout your home. If wiring repairs are needed within your home, we recommend calling a licensed electrician.

During a power restoration, priority is given to those who need it most and facilities that are essential to the health and welfare of the community.

These facilities include:

  • hospitals
  • health care providers
  • police
  • fire
  • news media

After service is restored to priority customers, our strategy is to do whatever it takes to restore the largest number of customer's power as quickly as possible.
There are other factors that can impact the time of power restoration: weather conditions, accessibility to damaged areas, time of day, and environmental issues. Since these factors can impact outages differently, it can be difficult to predict restoration times.
