treasures for teachers sponsorship
The new school year is here and most Arizona
students have returned to the classroom ready to learn and are loaded up with school
supplies. Some of the supplies they receive from their teachers may be
recycled—which is a good thing.
For the past several years, we have sponsored
Treasures for Teachers, a local nonprofit organization that provides donated
and recycled materials for teachers to use in the classroom.
An APS Foundation grant helps Treasures
for Teachers create Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) educational
kits, which take everyday items and combine them in unexpected ways to
demonstrate important STEM concepts in Arizona K-8 classrooms.
Bottle caps become fraction models, DVD cases
become germination experiments and strings of holiday lights become a basic
electrical circuit. These kits, focusing on a variety of subjects and grade
levels, give teachers hands-on activities to help demonstrate key learning
concepts to their students.
