Electric vehicles (EVs) lend a hand in helping us to achieve an increasingly cleaner energy mix and cleaner air for Arizona. As drivers get more choices of electric car models (over 130 expected by 2022), we want to focus on making driving EVs convenient for customers and making Arizona a great place to drive electric.

The technology that your employees, tenants and customers use is always changing, and keeping up with that change is important to your organization. EVs are a part of this changing technology and a part of ensuring a cleaner energy future for Arizona. With these changes comes the need for more convenient access to charging stations. We want to help.

In support of this shift we want Arizonans to have the choice to drive electric without the worry. Things like range anxiety or access to charging infrastructure shouldn’t be a barrier in going electric, and Take Charge AZ is one of the first steps toward removing these barriers.

The APS Take Charge AZ pilot programs offer free EV charging equipment, as well as installation and maintenance to businesses, government agencies, non-profits and multifamily communities. Participants will pay for any electric costs that come from using the equipment. Customers will be metered separately for the EV chargers and be placed on a time-of-use service plan to encourage use of the equipment when solar energy is abundant and energy prices are lower.

there are three offers included in the pilot

Workplace Charging

Phoenix is a sprawling city where people find themselves driving significant distances for work. By providing access to chargers at the workplace, you will provide employees with the option to drive electric and not have to worry about charging at home every night, uplifting employee morale and helping your company reduce its carbon footprint.

fleet vehicles

Many companies are looking to switch to an all-electric fleet and we want to help with that process. Having an electric fleet will cut down significantly on fuel costs and is a significant step toward reducing your carbon footprint and meeting your sustainability goals. In addition, EVs have a lower cost of ownership and are more reliable than other fuel type vehicles.

multifamily communities

Don’t let a lack of EV charging stop residents from choosing to live in your multifamily community and own an EV. Access to charging stations will provide ease of charging for your residents and will be a plus for future residents when they are searching for their next home.

Arizonans spend the majority of their drive time commuting to and from work and with carbon footprints top of mind, many people are wanting to make the switch to electric vehicles. One of the biggest barriers to purchasing an EV is the fear of not having enough charge to make it to and from a destination, particularly work. You can put your employees (and customers) at ease by participating in our Workplace Charging pilot.

Customers selected for this pilot will receive the infrastructure necessary to charge four EVs at one time. At no cost to the customer, we will:

  • Purchase the charging stations – two stations with two plugs each
  • Install the electrical cable and other equipment necessary to provide power to the charging station
  • Establish service and create a dedicated APS account for tracking and billing the energy used by the chargers
  • Perform routine equipment checks and respond to any issues
  • Help educate employees and customers who use the chargers on the benefits of charging EVs during the middle of the day

This pilot is designed to improve the accessibility to charging stations, but does not provide free charging. Customers selected will be responsible for the energy costs associated with drivers charging their vehicles.

who qualifies

There are a limited number of free chargers available through this pilot. Applications will be reviewed to determine which customer sites will contribute the most to a broader EV charging network in Arizona; therefore, sites that already have chargers will not be considered. Ideal candidates for this pilot are customer sites where:

  • There is enough space to physically accommodate the chargers
  • Employees have EVs or have expressed interest in owning EVs
  • Vehicles are parked for extended periods during the middle of the day so that the chargers can be powered by Arizona’s abundant solar energy

take charge az pilot for multifamily communities
Provide additional value to your residents by offering EV chargers. Charging options for renters are typically to plug-in at work if there are chargers on site or leave their vehicle at a public charging location. Having chargers at your community will encourage the purchase of EVs and can be presented as an added benefit when it’s time to renew an agreement. They will also make your community more appealing to future residents who either have an EV or plan to purchase one in the near future.
