top-tier reliability
APS is one of the nation's most reliable utilities as measured by the average number and duration of service interruptions experienced by the typical customer. The company is a consistent top quartile performer for system reliability in the electric industry. We invest more than $1 billion in the energy grid every year. These investments include new and stronger infrastructure, and advanced grid technologies that will continue to make our top-tier power even more reliable.

sadi/safi explanation
We measure customer reliability through two critical standard industry metrics known as SAFI and SADI scores.

  • System Average Interruption Frequency Index (SAIFI) which is a measure of the average number of interruptions a customer experiences in a year
  • System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI) which measures the number of interrupted minutes a customer experiences in a year.
APS has achieved excellent performance in both areas over the past decade, including reducing the frequency of customer outages by 30% and duration of customer outages by 19%. This accomplishment is the result of reliability programs, system improvement projects and investments in technology.
saidi/saifi compared to industry means
2015 aps saifi - 0.82
2015 saifi industry benchmark mean - 1.10
2015 aps saidi - 87 minutes
2015 saidi industry benchmark mean - 125 minutes

cost of electricity
APS has competitive commercial and industrial electricity rates, and we work hard to maintain stable rates over time. In fact, over the last 25 years, our commercial rates have increased 1.4 percent per year while our industrial rates have increased 1.7 percent per year – well below the rate of inflation, which is more than 3 percent per year over the same time period.

a diverse energy mix
APS is in the top quartile in the country for energy reliability and maintains a 50% carbon-free fuel mix inclusive of natural gas, nuclear, coal and renewables keeping energy costs competitive. This diverse fuel mix helps promote price stability by insulating APS customers from risk in commodity supply chains that could result in future price spikes.

cleaner energy
With energy coming from Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, energy saved through energy efficiency programs and over one gigawatt of renewable resources, nearly half of APS's energy mix is carbon-free. Our renewable resources include solar wind, biomass, biogas and geothermal power.
APS is one of the nation's leaders when it comes to solar power, and we are harnessing this energy from the sun in a variety ways:

  • Solana Generating Station – a 250-megawatt plant that captures and stores heat from the sun to produce energy even after the sun goes down
  • AZ Sun Program – 170 megawatts of utility-scale solar located throughout the state
  • Rooftop solar research programs – APS has launched two innovative research and development programs to explore the most reliable ways to integrate rooftop solar and other advanced technologies into the grid
  • Customer-sited rooftop solar and other purchased power
