az quilts
Judy and Michael Verret moved their retail shop, Arizona Quilts, into a new location in 2013. Built in the 1980s, the Surprise, AZ building was outfitted with a mix of lighting fixtures and bulbs that resulted in an unevenly lit space. After learning about the APS Express Solutions energy efficiency program, the Verrets knew an energy-saving lighting project was an ideal way to put the store in the best light and save money.

retail tips
  • Install occupancy sensors  in restrooms, break rooms, storage areas and walk-in refrigerators to save as much as 30–75% on lighting energy.
  • Sleeping computers still draw some energy, so turn them off - along with copiers, printers and other equipment - when not in use.
  • Identify potential energy efficiency improvements with a walkthrough assessment or professional energy audit. Establish baseline energy usage, track changes to document the impact, target your most inefficient systems and use savings for additional capital investments.
  • Save up to 75% of lighting energy use when you replace exterior incandescent lamps with high-pressure sodium lamps.
  • Reduce lighting energy use  by 15–25% when you replace overhead T12 fluorescent lamps and magnetic ballasts with premium efficient T8 fluorescent lamps and electronic ballasts.
  • Install daylight controls in foyers, atriums and other sunny spaces to reduce the use of artificial light when natural light is available.
  • Save $10–$20 a year for each incandescent exit sign you replace with an ENERGY STAR® qualified model that lasts up to 10 times longer.
