​The energy required to operate refrigeration systems accounts for 52% of the average electricity bill in large grocery stores. Energy-efficient refrigeration is a big step toward managing grocery and convenience store energy costs.

prescriptive rebates

​Large Phoenix-area grocery stores consume the most electricity on refrigeration, lighting and HVAC equipment. You can receive valuable rebates on energy upgrades for these big energy users and more — get started by selecting from the list below.

custom rebates

​Is your grocery store’s energy-saving project not included in the prescriptive list above? If your project doesn’t appear on our list of prescriptive rebates, it may qualify for a custom rebate.

​If your grocery store meets a minimum monthly demand for electricity, you’re eligible for a free facility assessment and rebates that cover up to 90% of refrigeration and lighting upgrade costs.

Fry’s Food Stores has worked closely with APS Solutions for Business to significantly improve the efficiency of their 39 Arizona store locations. From full refrigeration retrofitting to LED installation, Fry’s has taken advantage of many APS rebate offers, to the tune of $1.5 million in rebates earned to date.

  • Trap refrigerated air and keep food colder when you add night covers to open cases.
  • Switch from incandescent lamps to fluorescents  in walk-in refrigerators and add strip curtains to reduce air infiltration by up to 75%.
  • Use an evaporative condenser instead of an air-cooled condenser to save 3–9% on your grocery store refrigeration system.
  • High-efficiency compressors achieve potential energy savings of 6% for ice machines, 9% for snack and beverage vending machines, 12% for reach-in refrigerators, and 16% for reach-in freezers.
  • Reduce motor energy use  by up to 70% when you install high-efficiency evaporative fan motors in refrigerated cases and walk-in coolers.
  • When not in use, remember to close refrigerator, freezer, oven and steamer doors.
  • Install energy-savings controls to reach-in beverage coolers to reduce energy use by an average of 40%.
  • Install energy-efficient defrost controls to save up to 6% of refrigeration system energy use.
  • Save up to 45% of electricity use when you replace old appliances with ENERGY STAR® appliances including commercial solid-door refrigerators and freezers.
  • Minimize the loss of refrigerated air by installing automatic door closers or visible and audible door open signs.
