As Arizona's largest electric utility, APS is committed toward the development of sustainable energy. As part of that commitment, APS Solar Electric Service® is also bringing the power of the sun to commercial enterprises in remote areas.
Power for Telecommunications Towers
On a small mountain in the Tonto National Forest stand several tall towers topped with microwave dishes. The towers serve six telecommunications customers ranging from television stations to cellular telephone service providers. Once powered by a noisy diesel generator, these towers now draw their power from a 25-kilowatt solar plant constructed by APS in the fall of 1995. The company is one of the first utilities in the country to use a hybrid photovoltaic/diesel system of this size to serve customers. The benefits include more reliable power for customers, lower operating costs and less risk to the mountain's ecosystem.
Yuma Proving Ground Solar Power Plant
APS and Yuma Proving Grounds (YPG) have been working together on several renewable energy research projects, the largest of these projects is the WAM Solar Generating Station. The WAM power plant will supply electrical power at a remote location within the YPG at which power is not available. The WAM station will consist of :
-
105 kW fixed tilt, photovoltaic array
-
1.7 Megawatt-hours of electrical storage using a sealed glass mat technology battery
-
State-of-the-art power conversion electronics and controls
-
Valve regulated glass mat batteries.
The stations will generate an average of 600 kWh per day and will provide APS and YPG with valuable data to continue the improvement of solar generating technology.
