APS Solar Partner® City of Scottsdale

For the past three years, the City of Scottsdale has been a leader in the advancement of renewable energy in Arizona, and has been leading APS Solar Partner® program.

With this partnership, APS and the City of Scottsdale have agreed to build 406 kilowatts (kW) of solar generation at the City’s facilities. The City also purchases more than 40 megawatt-hours of solar energy annually under the APS Solar Partner® program.

The City and APS have agreed to work together on installations that includes a 300 kW single axis tracking system at  the Scottsdale Water campus, a 100 kW PV covered parking facility on the second deck of the existing parking structure at the Scottsdale Community Service Facility, as well as PV systems on their main library and the Mustang library.

In Arizona, where the state’s most plentiful natural resource is the sun, the City of Scottsdale has contributed greatly to the amount of green power available to its citizens and to their awareness of renewable energy programs. By hosting solar generating installations on City-owned facilities, Scottsdale has shown its progressive thinking and a genuine interest in bettering the lives of its residents.

In 1999, Scottsdale formed a unique alliance with APS in an effort to meet the need for covered parking at commercial buildings with a practical way of generating clean energy. An 8,500-square-foot parking structure covered with photovoltaic panels began generating energy at a City of Scottsdale service yard. This 34-kW system is an innovative example of Scottsdale’s commitment to green power and its applications in developed urban areas.

In 1999 when reviewing the City’s Energy Policy, a goal to demonstrate leadership in the use of alternate energy and new-energy technologies to encourage the growth of both these areas was added.

The City of Scottsdale also has the only Green Building Program in Arizona, which hosts an on-going lecture series for the public about solar energy in partnership with the Arizona Solar Energy Association.

Scottsdale is also the only Arizona city that issues an annual Sustainability Progress Report that tracks and reports on the consumption of renewable energy in the community.

Partnerships like this allow APS to take advantage of locations where solar can be built and installed at a minimum land cost to help reduce the overall cost of solar energy and enhance public education about solar and renewable energy benefits.
