Metropolitan Phoenix is one of the fastest growing areas of the country and, like most major metropolitan areas, Phoenix struggles with air quality problems. The majority of the Phoenix area air quality problems are a result of vehicle emissions. If you are not in a position to purchase a clean and efficient alternative fuel vehicle, there are still things you can do to save transportation fuel and reduce pollution.
Carpool, take the bus, bike or walk to work
Telecommute whenever possible
Work a compressed work schedule
Use video or teleconferencing to avoid traveling to meeting sites
Combine your errands into one trip
Keep your car tuned
Keep your tires properly inflated and your wheels aligned
Have your oil changed every 3,000 miles at an oil and lube station which recycles oil
Keep your air and fuel filters clean
Get your vehicle emissions checked on time
Avoid warming up your car in the winter
Use your turn signals to reduce braking by other drivers and allow traffic to flow more smoothly and efficiently
Use your car air conditioner during higher-speed driving only (over 40 mph)
Don’t overfill the gas tank of your car or lawnmower
Use the fuel with the lowest recommended octane number
Fuel your car after 4:00 p.m.
Recycle your car batteries
To further reduce pollution at home:
Conserve energy
Purchase energy-efficient appliances and light bulbs
Don’t use a wood stove or fireplace during on-burn days
