Energy Theft is Dangerous and Costly

It’s Dangerous. People have been shocked or electrocuted trying to bypass or tamper with an electric meter or other utility equipment. A fire can start or an explosion can occur. And if damaged, the meter may become dangerous to innocent children, adults or APS service personnel who come in contact with it. Children are especially at risk where meters, sockets and wires have been left exposed.

It’s Expensive for Everyone. Energy thieves are stealing from all of us. Millions of dollars in taxes are lost each year because of energy theft.

It’s Illegal. Meter tampering is against the law, just like any other type of theft.

It Spans All Economic Levels. It happens nationwide in homes, grocery stores, restaurants and many other commercial establishments.

Tampering Can Be Detected. APS meter readers and other field personnel are trained to detect tampering and dangerous hookups. In some cases, energy diversion can be detected by APS’ computerized billing system.

You Can Help Keep Someone from Being Hurt. APS wants to protect you from the hazards of energy theft. If you have reason to suspect energy theft, please call us at (602) 371-7248 so we can investigate. You do not have to give your name, and all information is kept confidential.
