Motors and VSDs

Motors comprise 50 percent of typical electricity consumption for industrial customers and 10 percent for the average large office building. The operating cost of a typical motor far exceeds the initial capital expense, so it makes sense to invest in efficiency from the start.

Many motors operate at a constant speed all the time, regardless of need. A variable speed drive (VSD) matches the motor's speed to the load, which can cut energy use and reduce wear and tear on the motor and its related components.

For New Construction, VSDs required as part of ASHRAE 90.1, 2004 are excluded.
