Lighting is the largest electrical expense for most businesses - ranging from 42 percent for small offices to 55 percent for small retail buildings in Arizona. It is also one of the easiest and most-effective to reduce. APS rebates can make your payback period even shorter.

Lighting Tips
- Turn off lights that aren't in use. Install occupancy sensors and controls to simplify this step and save 30-60 percent of lighting energy use.
- Look for the clear winners. High-use lights and older fixtures are likely to be cost-effective candidates for an upgrade.
- Replace outdated T12 fluorescent lamps and magnetic ballasts with T8 fluorescent lamps and electronic ballasts and reduce lighting energy use by 30 percent. Save even more with premium T8s.
- Incandescent lamps are cheap to purchase but the most expensive to operate. Switch to CFLs, which use 75 percent less energy. Save $20 per year for each incandescent exit sign you replace with an LED model.
- Replace high intensity discharge (HID) lights in high bay systems (often in gyms and auditoriums) with T5 high output (HO) lamps and fixtures to cut lighting energy use by almost 50 percent.
- Reduce lighting maintenance costs by 25 percent or more by replacing all lamps when they reach 70 percent of their calendar life.
