Transformer Safety

Customers with transformer boxes in their yards can help themselves, their neighbors and APS repair crews by keeping plants away from electrical equipment. Maintaining a safe work area around transformers, free of shrubs, trees, cactus and debris helps APS crews restore power more quickly during an outage and allows us to perform preventive maintenance.

Please consider the following guidelines when planning or maintaining landscaping near a transformer.

• Keep at least 10 feet of clear space in front of transformer doors.

• Maintain at least 2 feet of clear area on either side of the tranformer.

• From the left front corner of the concrete transformer base, clear a 6 foot by 6 foot area.

Report open or unlocked tranfomers immediately by calling 9-1-1 and APS at (602) 371-7171 or toll free at (800) 253-9408, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
