APS Launches Refrigerator Recycling Program
Customers get $30 Rebate, Plus Free Pick up of Old, Energy-Wasting Unit

February 24, 2010

PHOENIX - Today, APS launched a Refrigerator Recycling Program aimed at helping customers part with their old, but operable, extra refrigerators and freezers.

Customers can have these inefficient appliances picked up at no charge and earn a $30 rebate in the process. The program is an easy way to reduce energy use, save money and help the environment.

"Refrigerators and freezers manufactured before 1990 typically use three times more electricity than new appliances and can cost the average household nearly $100 a year to run," said Don Robinson, APS President and Chief Operating Officer. "Additionally, when improperly discarded or dumped in landfills, older refrigerators and freezers can release toxic substances into the air and soil. With our Refrigerator Recycling Program, the units will be dismantled and disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner."

APS will pick-up and transport the refrigerators and freezers to a new state-of-the-art facility where they will safely recycle each unit, taking it apart and capturing metal, plastic, oil, foam insulation and gases. Eventually, about 95 percent of these materials will be recycled. This mechanized process prevents toxic materials from escaping into the environment.

The new recycling facility, operated by JACO Environmental, will also bring green jobs to the Phoenix area, employing up to 17 new workers.

The program is limited to the removal of two units per household and is available to APS residential customers. Appliances must work and measure between 10 to 30 cubic feet.

To schedule the pick up of an old refrigerator or freezer for recycling, APS customers can call (877) 514-6654 or visit www.aps.com/turnitin. Customers will receive a check for $30 within four weeks after the appliance collection.

The APS Refrigerator Recycling Program is paid for by APS customers and approved by the Arizona Corporation Commission.

APS, Arizona's largest and longest-serving electricity utility, serves over 1 million customers with headquarters in Phoenix, APS is the principal subsidiary of Pinnacle West Capital Corp. (NYSE: PNW).
