APS and The Renewables Help Celebrate Phoenix Earth Day 2009 April 20, 2009 APS is celebrating Earth Day 2009 in a super way - by introducing a group of clean energy superheroes called The Renewables. Solar Man, Wind Woman, Bio, Tank and Geo represent five sources of renewable energy. Together, they are on a mission to help create a more sustainable planet by promoting and educating APS customers. "At APS, we are committed to renewable energy," said Barbara Lockwood, Manager of Renewable Energy for APS. "It's important for our customers to understand and get excited about the renewable options that APS will employ to power the future needs of Arizona." The public will get an up-close-and-personal look at The Renewables during the downtown Phoenix Earth Day celebration on Wednesday, April 22. In the form of 16-foot inflatables, the superheroes will appear at the APS booth, which will be powered by solar energy. Representatives of the company will also be on hand to pass out compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) and to answer questions about energy efficiency and renewable energy. "I could not think of a more appropriate event for The Renewables to make their official debut," said Lockwood, who also is president of the board of directors for Keep Phoenix Beautiful, the driving force behind the Earth Day celebration. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Cesar Chavez Plaza - directly across from City Hall. APS expects customer energy needs in 2025 to be more than 50 percent higher than today. To meet this demand, APS continues to look toward accelerating the amount of renewable energy the company provides to its customers. This new direction in energy policy will require customers to be aware, educated and engaged. The Renewables are one way to help APS accomplish this feat, by acting as educators and promoters for the company. About Keep Phoenix Beautiful APS, Arizona's largest and longest-serving electricity utility, serves about 1.1 million customers in 11 of the state's 15 counties. In 2008, APS won its second Edison Award in recognition of innovative leadership and operational excellence in the electric industry. Given annually by the Edison Electric Institute, the Edison Award is considered the industry's most prestigious honor.
