Highest-Ever Summer Production by Palo Verde October 1, 2008 The Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, the nation's largest power producer, simultaneously operated all three units for 100 continuous days ending Sept. 16. This is the first time since 2003 that the three units operated together for 100 continuous days. The plant produced more than 9,400,000 megawatt-hours of energy and operated at 99.6 percent reactor power during this time. This represents a new production record during the three plus months of highest power demand by APS customers. With the completion of steam generator replacements earlier this year, coupled with other equipment changes and upgrades, the plant's capacity increased by more than 5 percent or about 210 megawatts, bringing the plant total to approximately 4,010 megawatts, enough to serve more than 1.2 million customers. "Palo Verde is critical to Arizona and the Southwest in helping to meet electricity demand as our economy and population expand," said Randy Edington, Executive Vice President and Chief Nuclear Officer for APS, Palo Verde's operating utility. "Palo Verde's successful run and increased capacity are the result of our continuing effort to improve plant performance while safely and efficiently generating electricity for the long term." The power provided by the plant serves the Southwest with about half serving Arizona customers. The remaining amount is spread between California, New Mexico and Texas. Palo Verde is jointly owned by APS, Salt River Project, Southern California Edison Co., El Paso Electric, Public Service Co. of New Mexico, Southern California Public Power Authority and the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power. APS, Arizona's largest and longest-serving electricity utility, serves about 1.1 million customers in 11 of the state's 15 counties. In 2008, APS won its second Edison Award in recognition of innovative leadership and operational excellence in the electric industry. Given annually by the Edison Electric Institute, the Edison Award is considered the industry's most prestigious honor. With headquarters in Phoenix, APS is the principal subsidiary of Pinnacle West Capital Corp. (NYSE: PNW). - 30 - Contact: Betty Dayyo |
