APS Key Supporter of the 2008 GreenSummit September 3, 2008 The largest sustainability focused event in the Southwest will be taking over the Phoenix Convention Center on Friday and Saturday. The GreenSummit will bring more than 100 companies and an expected 10,000 consumers from all over the globe to an event that is made possible by support from APS and others. "Because of APS' commitment to sustainability, supporting the GreenSummit just felt natural," said Ed Fox, APS Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer, who will provide the keynote address to open the event. "We're excited for the opportunity the GreenSummit offers - to learn from one another and to explore new opportunities for creating a more sustainable future." As title sponsor, APS will feature two booths. Each booth will illustrate different parts of APS' sustainable practices. One will highlight APS' Green Choice Programs, which include rebates for high-efficiency air conditioners, financial incentives for customers who add roof-top solar and other renewable energy to their home or business, and information on ways to save energy. The booth also will provide free compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL's). The other booth will feature APS' new Hybrid Line Truck. This is the first commercially available "second generation" hybrid, which can recharge its batteries while driving or while off duty and plugged into the power grid. This truck is expected to be able to power the aerial device for up to eight hours of engine-off operation, and provide AC for the cab and auxiliary power for tools. The GreenSummit began last year as a student project on the ASU Tempe campus. As founder Chris Samila took the initiative to expand this year, the response has grown into what has now turned into the largest sustainability focused event in state history. "We have a finite window of opportunity to accelerate the process of creating a more sustainable future," Samila said. "APS has stepped forward to embrace this challenge to become a true leader in catalyzing change. The unwavering support and guidance of APS allowed the GreenSummit to expand from an undergraduate student project into a nationally attended conference and expo. We could not be prouder to have APS as our partner in helping our region transform into an example of a truly sustainable desert community." APS, Arizona's largest and longest-serving electricity utility, serves about 1.1 million customers in 11 of the state's 15 counties. In 2008, APS won its second Edison Award in recognition of innovative leadership and operational excellence in the electric industry. Given annually by the Edison Electric Institute, the Edison Award is considered the industry's most prestigious honor. With headquarters in Phoenix, APS is the principal subsidiary of Pinnacle West Capital Corp. (NYSE: PNW) -30- Contact: Jenna Henry |
