Almost 17,000 Customers Opt Out of Receiving Paper Bill

June 17, 2008

Phoenix, AZ  -   Almost 17,000 Arizona Public Service Company customers have "gone paperless" in past three months, allowing themselves more flexibility of when to view and pay their monthly bills and also help the environment in the process.

To help raise awareness of the paperless option, from March through May, APS donated $1 to the Tree Research and Education Endowment Fund (TREE Fund) for each customer who turned their paper bill off. The APS "Go Paperless, Save a Tree" campaign continues and encourages customers to cancel their receipt of a paper bill in the mail, and instead receive their bill online.

"APS uses 455,000 pounds of paper in just one year for printing and mailing bills to their 1.1 million customers," said Kelley Ryan, customer programs department leader, APS. "With almost 17,000 customers cancelling their paper bill, 80 trees will be saved, 7,258 pounds of solid waste pollution and 45,388 gallons of wastewater will be avoided."

Customers can opt to "go paperless" by logging onto aps.com and clicking on the Go Paperless Icon or select Turn Your Printed Bill Off from the Profile Update page. Each month APS will send customers an e-mail letting them know when their bill is ready for viewing online. The online bill will include all the information and details available on your paper statement.

"We thank APS and its customers for their insightful, creative incentive program which will help to ensure the health and sustainability of our urban forests," said Janet Bornancin, executive director, TREE Fund. "Their $17,000 gift to the TREE Fund clearly supports our mission of advancing arboriculture through research and education."

The TREE Fund is a non-profit organization committed to helping people, trees and the environment and is dedicated to funding projects to advance the knowledge of arboriculture.

Environmental impact estimates were made using the Environmental Defense Fund Paper Calculator.  For more information visit http://www.papercalculator.org.
