APS Rate Allows Up to 40 Percent Discount

June 12, 2008

Phoenix, AZ  -   PHOENIX - With summer in full swing and updates to the federal low-income guidelines soon to be effective, now is the ideal time for APS customers to find out if they qualify for the APS Low Income Energy Support Program (E-3) discount, which can lower the cost of monthly electric bills up to 40 percent.

The discounts apply to customers who have a household income within 150 percent of the federal low-income guidelines, as determined by the Arizona Department of Economic Security (DES). The 2008 guidelines, which go into effect July 1, are:

The monthly discount varies depending on the amount of energy used. "Under this program, it's important to remember a simple rule of thumb: the less energy used, the higher the discount," said Jerry Mendoza, APS program manager. "The program is designed to help limited-income customers with their energy bills, and encourage the wise use of energy, which is something everybody should try to do."

To sign-up for the program, customers must have an APS residential account in their name, in addition to qualifying under the federal low income guidelines. Customers enrolled in E-3 will see a credit on their electric bill based on the amount of energy used that month.

To sign up for the program, customers must fill out a short application, available at all APS business offices, Community Action Program offices, and online at aps.com. Or, customers may call:

- DES at (602) 542-6600 in the Phoenix metro area or (800) 582-5706 outside of the Phoenix area;
- APS at (602) 371-7171 in the Phoenix metropolitan area, (800) 253-9405 outside of the Phoenix area

The application is pre-addressed, and postage is also pre-paid. Processing of the application by DES generally takes between 30 to 45 days.
