APS, Phoenix Suns Offer Education Grant to K-12 Teachers

August 16, 2007

Phoenix, AZ  -

APS, in partnership with the Phoenix Suns, is offering public schools within the company’s service territory mini-grants of up to $500 each for innovative, student-based education projects.

The program provides funding for projects that address one or all of the following topics: energy, environment, reading, mathematics, or character education. Projects must be implemented during the 2007-2008 school year.

This marks the 12th year of the program. As an example, last year grants were awarded to:

  • Capitol Elementary School in Phoenix, whose K-6 students, their families and local community constructed ceramic murals of the Six Pillars of Character — trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. Students practiced math and measurement skills; studied Roman, Aztec and Byzantine history; and practiced good character.
  • MingusUnion High School in Cottonwood, whose students studied the effects of forest fires to determine the best method for reforestation. Students visited the Mingus Springs Campground and used their reading, writing, math and basic science skills to calculate tree growth and how long it would take to reforest a burned area. They also planted blue spruce trees, built dams and planted seeds to slow the soil erosion in the area.

Grants will be awarded in three categories: grades Kindergarten-6, grades 7-9, and grades 10-12. Applications are being accepted on an ongoing basis through Jan. 31, 2008, and will be awarded monthly. In total, up to $50,000 in funding is available through the Education Mini-Grant Program.

A printable version of the Education Mini-Grants brochure and application are available online at www.aps.com/grants. Applications also are available at any APS customer office. Or, for more information, contact Louise Moskowitz at (602) 250-2291 or e-mail at Louise.Moskowitz@aps.com.

APS, Arizona’s largest and longest-serving electricity utility, serves more than 1 million customers in 11 of the state’s 15 counties. With headquarters in Phoenix, APS is the largest subsidiary of Pinnacle West Capital Corp. (NYSE: PNW)
