APS, Phoenix Suns Offer Education Grants To K-12 Teachers

August 29, 2006

Phoenix, AZ  -   APS, in partnership with the Phoenix Suns, is offering public schools within the company's service territory mini-grants of up to $500 each for innovative, student-based education projects.

The program provides funding for projects that address one or all of the following topics: energy, environment, reading, mathematics, or character education. Projects must be implemented during the 2006-2007 school year.

This marks the 11th year of the program. As an example, in prior years grants have been awarded to:

  • Moon Valley special education elementary students mastering math skills by designing, building and maintaining a campus garden that strategically placed drought-tolerant shade trees to save energy;
  • Downtown Phoenix kindergarteners, who held a campout with songs, games, lesson plans and crafts intended to reinforce basic reading and math skills learned in the classroom; and
  • Elementary students in Flagstaff researched, designed and assembled miniature solar cars to compete in the school's science fair.

Grants will be awarded in three categories: grades Kindergarten-6, grades 7-9, and grades 10-12. Applications are being accepted on an ongoing basis through Jan. 31, 2007, and will be awarded monthly. In total, $50,000 in funding is available through the Education Mini-Grant Program.

A printable version of the Education Mini-Grants brochure and application are available online at www.aps.com/grants. Applications also are available at any APS customer office. Or, for more information, contact Louise Moskowitz at (602) 250-2291 or e-mail at Louise.Moskowitz@aps.com.
