As much as 15 percent of your energy bill comes from heating water, which is why installing a solar water heater makes financial sense. Especially when the average solar water heating system for a family of four can cost as little as $1,000 after APS incentive and rebates. Once installed, you can use the power of the sun to heat your water for free!

Other incentives such as a Federal tax credit (30 percent of the system cost) and a State tax credit (25 percent of system cost up to $1,000) may also be available to you. To receive the full APS incentive, participants are required to contribute a minimum of 15 percent of the actual system cost after all utility and tax incentives have been applied.

Solar water heater installations are subject to a post-installation site visit. After receiving clearance from the local city or county inspector, APS will determine whether the system was selected for a site visit. If the system is selected, APS will contact the customer to schedule a convenient appointment time. To receive the APS renewable energy incentive, all solar water heaters selected for the site visit must meet the outlined criteria on the Site Visit checklist.

How solar water heaters work:

1. The solar collector on your roof absorbs sunlight.
2. Depending on the type of system, it heats the water or transfer fluid.
3. The hot water is piped to a holding tank, ready for use, or the hot transfer fluid is sent through the pipes to heat the water in your tank.
4. The water or fluid is circulated back through the system, keeping it hot.
5. With either type of technology, your backup system will work at night to provide you with more hot water after all the solar-heated water in your tank has been used.
