Incentives for Non-Residential Solar Process & Space Cooling

It's easy to understand how the sun can be used for providing heat, but it can also be used to provide cooling for your facility or for industrial processes used in your business. Processes like absorption chilling and desiccant cooling can be used to remove heat from your building and give you significant savings in HVAC  and other cooling costs.

How solar space cooling works:

  • Absorption chilling
These types of systems use solar heat in conjunction with a refrigerant with a low boiling point. The energy these systems capture is used to separate a liquid mixture that includes an absorbent such as lithium bromide salt and a refrigerant fluid such as water. The refrigerant (such as water vapor) is condensed and eventually evaporated to produce the desired cooling effect.

  • Desiccant system
This technology uses "desiccants", substances such as silica gel, calcium sulfate, etc. to absorb humidity, which holds in heat,  from the air and to cool it. The desiccant removes moisture from the air as it comes in contact with the air stream being delivered into a room thus lowering the air's humidity level and temperature. At the same time, the solar collectors provide thermal energy that is used to dry out the moisture absorbed by the desiccant.

Getting Started:

APS incentives for Solar Space Cooling can be paid as a Production Based Incentive (PBI) based on the actual production of your system or as an Up-Front Incentive (UFI) based on the estimated energy usage the system will displace.

Your installer can help you through the incentive process but you should familiarize yourself with the equipment qualifications and installation guidance documents for a PBI or UFI.
