You can use the sun's heat to cost-effectively warm areas in your home. Once integrated into your home, solar space heating is a clean and virtually cost-free source of warmth. Solar space heating systems are typically designed to handle anywhere from 30 percent to 70 percent of your space heating needs and relies on your current system to provide any additional heat if needed.
How solar space heating works:
An "active" solar space heating system consists of a solar collector and a pump or electric fan that distributes or transfers that heat where needed.
- A solar collector absorbs thermal energy from the sun to heat either air or water depending on the type of system.
- A fan or pump moves the collected heat directly to areas where needed, or it can be transferred to some type of storage system (usually liquid) where it can be used later.
- You current heating system is used as a back-up as needed.
Getting Started:
Once you've chosen a solar professional licensed in the state of Arizona and have worked with them to design a system to meet your needs, you will need to reserve the APS incentive for your project.
APS incentives for solar space heating for residential customers are paid as Up-Front Incentive (UFI) based on the estimated kWh savings the system provides as defined in the Residential APS Renewable Energy Incentive Chart. The kWh savings are estimated based on your system's OG-100 performance rating as published by the Solar Rating and Certification Corporation (SRCC).
In most cases your installer will be familiar with the incentive process and can help you with any of the required forms. For specific information regarding equipment and installation requirements that must be met to qualify for an incentive, please refer to the Equipment Qualifications and Installation Guidance information sheet.
