Phoenix Mayor, SRP, APS Kick Off Lighting Campaign

Phoenix, AZ  -

The City of Phoenix, SRP and APS joined forces today to kick off an energy efficiency lighting campaign for residents. Mayor Phil Gordon highlighted the effort by helping a Phoenix family change the light bulbs in their home with energy-efficient ENERGY STAR® qualified compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs).

The three partners are encouraging residents to replace their incandescent bulbs with CFLs. Compared to incandescent bulbs; CFLs use at least two-thirds less energy, which reduce energy costs.

“By installing CFLs now, you are helping the City of Phoenix demonstrate its commitment to improve the environment and save energy when summer demand is at its peak,” Gordon said.

A message to the more than 570,000 Phoenix-based SRP customers was sent with their August electricity bills to encourage them to make the change. If 570,000 residents replace at least one incandescent bulb with a CFL in their homes and businesses, greenhouse gas emissions would be reduced by more than 251 million pounds over the life of the bulbs. In addition, energy use would be reduced by more than 159 million kilowatt-hours -- enough to light 91,000 homes for a year and save $16 million in energy costs.  “Replacing incandescent light bulbs in the home with CFLs is one of many ways SRP is helping customers conserve energy, save money and reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said Lori Singleton, SRP manager, environmental initiatives.

In addition, SRP will partner with Ace Hardware to offer one free CFL light bulb to customers who make a purchase of $20 or more. SRP customers can access the coupon offer by taking the Energy Star pledge online at srpnet.com/pledge. SRP’s goal is to have 100,000 customers make the pledge to change a light bulb in their home, which would be enough to light nearly 16,000 homes for a year.

Already, through APS’ ENERGY STAR Lighting Program, more than three million bulbs have been sold, saving more than $90 million in energy costs and reducing carbon emissions by 675,000 tons. Through the APS Lighting Program, the discounted bulbs are available at more than 400 local retail locations statewide and at more than 50 Phoenixlocations. With the APS discount, the bulbs are available for less than one dollar each. Recently, APS was named 2007 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency for its lighting program.

Tammy McLeod, APS general manager, Customer Service & Operations said, “Partnerships such as this have bottom line, immediate benefits for residents and the environment. We’re proud to join our Phoenix partners to expand this effort. A little bulb really does make a big change. Today, APS is committing to offering discounts on an additional one million CFLs through the end of the year.”

Phoenicians can learn more about CFLs by logging onto srpnet.com and aps.com to find the retail locations selling the discounted bulbs.
