AAAME Graduates Gain Skills for Success

Phoenix, AZ  -

Eight Valley companies are more prepared than ever for the challenges of operating a business after graduating from a mentoring and development program developed by APS.

The APS Academy for the Advancement of Small, Minority and Women Owned Enterprises (AAAME) was launched by APS in 1997 to teach small-business owners the skills necessary for their companies to succeed. This is done through training in such areas as strategic planning, finance, management/operations and marketing.

Students then are partnered with advisers from both the non-profit and private sector – including APS volunteers, business consultants and retired executives – who can lend lessons learned from their own experiences in the business world. The academy is free to those accepted. The graduating companies of this two-year program represent such industries as airport security training, software design and truck fleet repair.

This year’s graduates:

  • AviaEd Adaptive Training Services LLC, Phoenix; owner: Lorena de Rodriguez
  • Business Innovations, Phoenix; owner: Janice Barham
  • Desert Fleet-Serv Inc., Phoenix; owners: Tom and Kim Cooper
  • Estelle Inc., Phoenix; owner: Cindy White
  • Marking Solutions Inc., Tempe; owner: Bob and Anne Trombatore
  • Perma-Finish Inc., Phoenix; owner: Angel Castellano and Rick Quiroz
  • Tin Works, Scottsdale; owner: Leroy and Chris Dowdy
  • TireWorks, Phoenix; owner: Charles R. Scott and Gina Jenkins

"Our mission is to provide these business owners with the tools and knowledge they need to prosper in their respective industries," said Rena Huber, director of the program. "Strong businesses are a vital component of a healthy community. This is the third class of AAAME graduates, and I know they will experience the same success graduates of our first two classes have."

APS, Arizona's largest and longest-serving electric utility, serves more than 874,000 customers in 11 of the state's 15 counties. APS, with headquarters in Phoenix, is the largest subsidiary of Pinnacle West Capital Corp. (NYSE: PNW).
