Most new major appliances have bright yellow EnergyGuide Labels that shows how much energy the product uses. The label also tells how much energy that appliance will use in a year, compared to competing brands and models. The next time you shop for an appliance, take along the explantantion below to understand the label.
And be sure to take your calculator with you. Calculate the additional cost of an energy-efficient appliance over it's lifetime, not just on the purchase price. New refrigerators, freezers and washers may last up to 15 years. So if the energy-efficient model costs $150 more, you'll only be spending an extra $10 per year in effect. And the appliance will likely save you an amount equal to or greater than that each year in elelctric usage.
