When buying a washing machine, look for models with water level and water temperature controls. A water level control allows you to match the amount of water used to the size of your wash load. A water temperature control allows you to use the lowest temperature that will clean your clothes.
You may also want to consider buying a front loading model because it will use less hot water than a top loading machine.
Wash only full loads.
Up to 90% of the energy used for washing clothes goes to heating the water. So it's wise to use warm or cold water to wash and cold to rinse.
If possible, adjust water levels to the type of wash. Try washing on a "delicate" setting instead of "regular". The motor won't have to work as hard.
Put clothes through an additional washer spin cycle before putting them in the dryer. This will help them dry more quickly.
